AT a MEETING of GENTLEMEN, held pursuant to Public Notice, at the Grammar School, Christehurch, on Friday evening, the 9th inst., for the purpose of establishing a Literary and Scientific Institution, to be called the Christehurch Athenseum, the Rev. O. Mathias in the Chair, the following resolutions were adopted:— 1. Moved by the Rev. H. Jacobs, and seconded by C. E. Prichard, Esq., " That an Institution of an exclusively Literary and Scientific character be established, to he called 'The Christehurch Athenaeum.'" 2. Moved by W. G. Brittan, Esq., and seconded by J. C. Porter, Rsq., "That Subscriptions be entered into for the erection of a Building for this purpose." 3. Moved |by Mr. Cridland, and seconded by Captain Westenra, "That a Committee be appointed to collect subscriptions, and to carry out the objects suggested in the preceding resolutions." , 4. Moved by C. A. Barker, Esq., and seconded by S. Bealey, Esq., *' That the following gentlemen be a Committee : The Revs. O. Mathias, H. Jacobs, and J. Wilson; Captain Westenra, J. C. Watts Russell, Esq., W. G-. Brittan, Esq., C. E. Prichard, Esq., C. A. Barker, Esq., T. Cass, Esq., J. Marshman, Esq., W. B. Bray, Esq., S. Bealey, Esq., H. J. Cridland, Esq., and J.C. Porter, Esq., with power to add to their number. That the Rev. H. Jacobs be requested to act as secretary pro tern,, and W. G. Brittan, Esq. as Treasurer to the Institution. And that the Committee be requested to prepare a Report, to be submitted to a General Meeting of Subscribers, which shall be called so soon as a sufficient sum of money has been raised to justify the commencement of the proposed building." 5. Moved by the Rev. J. Wilson, and seconded by J. Marshman, Esq., " That the Committee be requested to communicate with Mr. Godley, with the view of obtaining the grant of a suitable site within the town of Christehurch for the proposed building, and for the temporary use of the books belonging to the College Library." 6; "A vote of thanks to the Chair," moved by Mr. C. Davie, seconded by W. B. Bray, Esq. Subscriptions will be received hy_ the Treasurer, and any member of the Committee ; also at the Store of Mr. Gibbs, Christehurch. Christehurch, July 12th,
