Australian Cotton.—Mr. C. Eeynolds, of Tocal, having obtained some of the Sea Island Cotton seed, imported by Mr. S. A. Donaldson, M. C, planted a patch of land, and sent home a sample of the produce to his brother, who iesides near Liverpool. His brother showed it to one of the Liverpool brokers, who thus reports the results: " The cotton you sent me I showed to one of the first brokers in Liverpool ; he looked much surprised, and without waiting- for any explanation, said it was one of the best samples he had ever seen ; in fact, he said, it would be worth' any money ;' and, continued he, ' I don't hesitate to say that cotton of this quality, and as clean, would be worth this day from 2s. to 2s. 6d. per lb. After drawing it between his thumbs 20 times, he said, ' I have been in the trade 40 years, and I never saw cotton s<» pure and so strong as this.' He asked particularly what seed you sowed, and added, ' It sometimes happens that it degenerates after two or three years.' He begged to be allowed to show it to some friends, and would see me again on 'Change, but I missed him, and he has it still

Of course I was much pleased to astonish the natives. It seems to me that the resources of your country are unbounded, and not half or a quarter developed." The sample sent home was a picked one, and well cleaned; but even allowing for this, the value placed on it shows the perfection to which cotton can be grown in this colony.— Maitland Mercury.
