PUBLIC MEETING.

On Tuesday evening, a numerous and re spectable assemblage took place at the White Hart Inn, to consider the Rules drawn up by the Committee for the Ohristchnrch Colonists' Society. I. Tanored. Esq., E. J. WaWefcUaS wa * called to the chair. V X' A printed copy of the Rules adopted at Lyttelton on Friday last, having been just received by the Chairman, he called upon Mr. Fitton to read them, in case any useful suggestion mHuJ be gleaned from them. \.A Much discussion then ensued on several of the proposed Rules. Mr. Inwood made many objections, without taking the sense of the meeting upon them, and also moved three or four amendments, to the general effect of abridging the powers given to the Committeebut these motions, after being fully discussed' were successively rejected. * ' Some useful amendments of detail were proposed and seconded by Messrs. S.■ Bealev, Templar, Fitton, J. Bealey, Disher, and Rees, and carried by large majorities. Mr. J. Bealey moved a resolution to the effect that the words " being twenty-one years of age," should be added to the end of Rule 26: so as to admit persons between 16 and 21 yeais of age, as members, but to debar them from voting. He spoke at some length in support of this motion, which was seconded by Mr. Spillard. Messrs. Inwood, Craney, Templar, Rae, and several others opposed the motion. After a very full discussion, it was rejected by a large majority.— Christchurch Guardian. f We hope to be able to give the Christchurch rules in our next.]

We rejoice to hear that steps have been taken to open a Masonic Lodge at Christchurch. The application for a charter or^Var--rant of Constitution had been forwarded to the Grand Lodge of England, and we ex*ect to see a Lodge opened on the Plains in soir/ething less than a year from the present time. VSTe understand it is contemplated to call the new Lodge after the patron Saint of Canterbury (Saint Augustine.)— Ghristchurch Guardian.
