HER MAJESTY'S BIRTHDAY. PUBLIC REGATTA AND SPORTS. On MONDAY, MAY 24th, A PUBLIC REGATTA will take place -£*- at LYTTELTON, when Pbizes will be offeved to be competed for in the following races : ].—The Grand Lyttelton Stakes, open to all vessels, from 8 to 15 tons inclusive, engaged in the Carrying trade from this Port. Entry £l Is., with a purse added. 2.—The Godley Stakes, for Open Sailing Boats under 8 tons. Entry 10s., with a purse added. 3.—A Rowing Match for 5-oared Boats, with Steersman. Entry 55., with a purse added. 4. —A ditto, for 4-oared ditto, with Steersman. Entry 55., with a purse added. 5.—A Sculling Dingy Race. Entry 2s. 6d. with a purse added. 6.—Duck Hunt with Dingy, to be chased by 4-oared boats. Entry 2s. 6d., with a purse added. 7.—Canoe Race. Entry 55., with a purse addedA Variety of Old English. Sports, Will take place for the amusement of the spectators on shore, consisting of Chasing a Soaped Pig, Running in Sacks, a Race with Wheelbarrows, and a Foot-race. The whole of the Sports will be under the superintendence of Captain Parsons, assisted by the following gentlemen as a committee : — Mr. Le Cren, Mr. Tribe, Mr. Alport, Mr. Willooghby, Mr. Baytield, Mr. Compton, and Messrs." Tippetts & Co., who will furnish every information to intending competitors. Entries to be made on or before 7 o'clock on Saturday evening, the 22nd inst., at Mr. Bannister's, Lyttelton Aims. The Sports to be Eegulated by the following Rules. 1. The order in which the Sailing Matches take place to be determined by reference to the quarter from which the wind is blowing at the time of starting. 2. Any vessel fouling another to lose all chance of the prize, to be decided as follow* : Ist. Where two boats are on different tasks, the one on the larboard tack fouls. 2nd. When two boats are on the same tack, the leeward boat fouls. 3rd. When one boat is on a wind and the other going free, the boat going free fouls. 8. Sailing Boats to start from the Jetty, and to sail twice round the boundaries defined by the ship " Stag," the reef off Quail Island, and the boat moored off Dampier's Bay, back to the starting point. 4. The boats in the rowing matches to start from the Jetty, and row twice round the Ship " Stag," and the Boat moored off Dampier's Bay back to the starting point. 5. All boats to carry a distinguishing flag, to be approved by the Committee at the time of Entry. 6. The Dingys to be sculled (with the oar from the stern) from the Jetty round the boat off Dampier's Bay, back to the starting point. 7. The Duck Hunt to consist of a man in a Dingy, chased by not more than three 4-oared boats, without a steersman, the duck to have a lair start, and the hunt not to exceed 20 minutes. The Duck to be caught by the Bow oarsman. 8. In the Canoe Race, paddles only to be used, and the distance paddled to be the same as rowed by the 4-oared Boats. '■>- 9. The Pig to have a start of 20 yards, and to be fairly caught by the Tail, to be claimed. 10 —The Race of Jumping in Sacks, to be performed from the corner of Canterbury and London Street, to the Esplanade, and back. 11.—The Wheelbarrow Race to be run from Oxford Street, along Norwich Quay, to the Mitre Hotel, and back. No one to start but those duly entered j all parties to be blindfolded, and any interference with the persons running to necessitate a fresh start. . 12.—The Foot Race to be run from Patterson's Store, along the Christchurch Road round the Signal Staff and back to the starting point. 13.—1n the event of any Boats being prevented entering from special circumstances at the time
