The Lyttelton Times. February 28, 1852.
We are about to attempt an improvement in the Lyttelton Times. By the publication of a weekly supplement instead of the fly sheet which has hitherto been issued, and by removing- into it as many of the advertisements as possible, we propose to give more space for matters of general interest. At first this supplement will consist of but two pages ; but we propose shortly to increase it to four, and if necessary eight pages. We propose by obtaining the services of regular correspondents at various parts of the settlement, to render our supply of local intelligence more complete and satisfactory. But we shall feel greatly obliged to any of our readers who will second our endeavours by communicating facts likely to prove of interest, especially to our friends in England. The Lyttelton Times has already a considerable circulation amongst the friends of the colonists in England, and the maintenance of this circulation which is attended with considerable benefit to the set tlement. mainly depends upon the amount of information which our columns afford upon the local affairs of the colony. We cannot avoid the opportunity here afforded us of thanking the public of Canterbury for the support we have hitherto received. The establishment of a Journal at the earliest foundation of a community, and when its whole population did not exceed a thousand souls, was a task of great difficulty and risk; and in endeavouring to adapt our Journal to the increasing wants of the settlement, we venture to anticipate an increased share of that patronage, which has hitherto supported our efforts, but without which they cannot be maintained. Many of our readers have complained that their friends in England have not been regularly supplied with copies of the " Lyttelton Times." We greatly regret this irregularity. It arose from the loss of the " Maria," in which were all the English copies of our Journal for several weeks prior to her sailing. We have no doubt that as soon as Mr. Shrimpton at Oxford shall have ascertained the cause of the deficiency he will have supplied it by reprinting the missing numbers, of which a few copies had arrived in England by post. For some time past, instead of consigning the English copies to Mr. Shrimpton for distribution, we have supplied them immediately to the subscribers from this office through the post.
Auckland. —The '" Cicely" from Auckland brings us riles of the New Zealander and of the Southern Cross to the 4th February. There is not a word about the discovery of gold iv Auckland. The principal news consists of the proceedings of the new Corporation which appears to he in active operation ; they refer mainly to the building of a lunatic asylum, and to the state of the roads. The report of the Sub-Committee on the roads states that in the West Town Ward, 34,000/. had been received by tbe government for the sale of land, whilst the sum expended in improvements amounted to 50/. Tbe Chairman of the Sub-Committee protested against the report, which he said was drawn up in his absence. The election of Wardens for pasturage purposes had taken place in the adjoining Hundreds. The twelfth anniversary of the colony had been celebrated with the usual honours. The news of the disgraceful attempt to fix the debtof the New Zealand Company upon the General lievenues of the colony, had been received by all parties at Auckland with the same indignation as at tbe other settlements of the colony. The Neu: Zealander of the 4th of Feb., complains that we do not publish any market-note of the price of provisions. We admit that a press of matter has compelled us sometimes to omit " the markets," this is probably the reason why there is no account of " the markets" in any of the Auckland papers just come to hand.
