Cape Town ami Graham's Town papers had been received in Sydney to July the Bth. By the last frontier post intelligence had been received of a severe fight between General Somerset's division and the rebels. The loss of life on both sides was great. The 74th Highlanders, who had just arrived, and whose gallantry is mentioned in the highest terms, had three killed, ,^tid ten or eleven wounded. The whole of the Hottentot population of Graham's Town had been disarmed. The accounts on the whole are of the most gloomy and unsatisfactory character. tute, Hobart Town.—The Bishop of Tasmania has resigned his seat in the Executive Council, and the Lieut.-Governor has appointed the Colonial Treasurer to the vacancy.—The Hobart Town Advertiser says that Mr. O'Donohoe repented resigning his ticket-of-leave, asked for it back again next day,and His Excellency gave it him.—A. M'Naughten, Esq., has presented a donation of £50 to the building fund of the Mechanics' Institute at Launceston.—From the half-yearly revenue return just issued by the managers of the Hobart Town Savings' Bank.it appears that the number of accounts opened since its establishment in 1845 is 6182. The total amount deposited since its first establishment is 181,709/. lls. 9c1.; and the total amount of repayments since ditto, 127,222/. 9s. sd. Average amount of each person's deposit since ditto, 29/. 7s. lOld. Average amount of each person's repayment since ditto, 201. lls. 7d. Number of accounts open on the Ist inst. 2456/. The reserve fund now amounts to 721/. 9s. 4d.—The nomination of the candidates for Legislative honours in Van Diemen's Land was to take place on or about the 21st October.—On Thursday evening, Sept. 4th, from 9 to 10 o'clock, a very vivid appearance of the Australis appeared in the hemisphere; it shot forth about half-past nine in beautiful corruscations over Mount Wellington, then veered off to the eastward, and about a quarter before ten formed a quantity of luminous arches, reaching nearly to the zenith, which glared and fluttered, seemingly to ignite some inferior vapour darting off in corruscations from south to north. —The proceeds of the Wesleyan bazaar at Hobart Town, for two days, amounted to upwards of£3oo. —Lieut.-Governor La Trobe was about to visit the Ballarat Gold Fields.— The Port Philip Immigration Board has been remodelled. The following are now its members: Mi". Childers, chairman; Mr. Sullivan, colonial surgeon ; Mr. Ginn, colonial architect ; and Mi-. Grimes, clerk of the Executive Council.—The Wesleyan ministers of Victoria, at their first annual meeting, agreed to a congratulatory address to Mr.La Trobe.—The South Australians are highly delighted at the prospect of steam communication with England via the Cape.—ln consequence of the late wars between the German States and the Duchies of Schles-wig-Holstein, several inhabitants of the latter state have been exiled. Many of them have held high positions in their own country, and in all probability most of them will make South Australia their future home.—There are said to be a great many persons unemployed at Adelaide at present —There are 1,900 depositors in the Adelaide Savings' Bank.—The total quantity of land sold in the colony of South Australia, from its establishment to the 30th June last, was 656,882 acres.
