CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times. Sir, —In your report of Mr. Dampier's speech at the meeting of the Society of Land Purchasers, on the 25 th ult. I find it stated that in an interview which Mr. Dampier had with me at the Land Office, on the subject of his section on the Christchurch and Lyttelton road, I, "Mr. Cass had admitted that the road had diverged from the original plan." I beg most distinctly to state that I admitted no such thing; I stated then, as I do now, that the road made by the contractor was strictly within the limits of the reserve made by the surveyor who marked out, surveyed, and mapped the road last January, (probably before Mr. Dampier ever saw it). In consequence of Mr. Dampier's complaint that the road intruded on his section, I had a special survey made on the completion of the road by the Contractor, and found that the latter had kept strictly within the limits of the land reserved. All that I admitted, at the interview to which Mr. Dampier alludes, was to the effect that the natural features of the country might not in every instance be found to be delineated with perfect exactness on the map. I made no special admission with respect to Mr. Dampier's section, on examination I found that no mistake had been made. Mr. Dampier's assertion is therefore entirely unfounded. I am Sir, yours obediently, Thomas Cass. Christchurch, Ist July, 1851.
