IMPROVEMENT OF THE HARBOUR.
At a public meeting held yesterday at the "Mitre," to consider the best means for preventing a recurrence of the mischief occasioned by the late heavy gales; Mr. Gudley in the chair ; It was moved by Mr. Longden, seconded by Mr. Alport, That it is requisite that an officer who should combine the duties of Harbour Master and Pilot, be appointed without delay. Moved by Mr. Fitzgerald, seconded by Mr. Le Cren, That it is absolutely necessary for the safety of small vessels bringing up opposite the town, that heavy moorings he laid down as soon as possible, sufficient to hold six vessels of from 100 tons. • Moved by Mr. Fraser, seconded by Mr. Pollard, That it is the opinion of this meeting that the expences necessarily incurred in carrying out the above objects, ought if possible to be defrayed out of the present surplus revenues of this settlement. Moved by Mr. Tulloch, seconded by Mr. Fisher, That a committee he appointed to draw up a memorial to his Excellency, the Governor in Chief, respectfully requesting his sanction to the necessary expenditure for the above objects. Moved by Mr. Le Cien, seconded by Mr. Evans, That the committee consist of the following gentlemen":—Mr. Fitzgerald, Mr. Longden, Mr, Alport, Mr. Wortley, Mr. T Hard. These resolutions respectively being approved, the meeting separated with a vote of thanks to Mr. Godley, as Chairman.
