JOURNAL OF THE WEEK.
The " Travancore " lias arrived and has discharged her living cargo of 161 souls upon our shores. The immigrants are all in good health, and have had a prosperous voyage. They have landed under more favorable circumstances than those from the " Isabella Hercus," iv the beauty of an autumn summer, instead of a cold and merciless pelting rain. The immigration barracks which have been thoroughly cleaned and whitewashed for their occupation, are again filled. On Thursday the first ordinary General Meeting of the Society of Land Purchasers under the new regulations, was held at the Land Office at Christchurch, and the report of the committee presented. This is the first meeting which has taken place at Christchurch, and proves the desire of the colonists to make the capital as far as possible the centre of business of the settlement. The bridge over the Heathcote on the bridle track to Christchurch, is to be rebuilt a little lower down the river, so as to be at the end of the accommodation road, running from the new road to the river, between section 48 on the east, and 74 and 62 on the west. This bridge is to be commenced at once. The new road has been nearly completed, with the exception of the part over the Raupo swamp. The workmen have just got into the swamps at each end. There is, we believe, no reason to doubt that tl>e road over it will be complete and safe in a very short time. The plains begin now to exhibit signs of life in several directions. But a few weeks ago there was not a trace of human life ; now on all sides, you see houses commenced, or tents and encampments promising' coiufoitable farm houses at no remote period of time liv consequence of the news from England, we are compelled to postpone the report of the meeting of the Society of Laud Purchasers until next week,.
