THE WOODS OF COMPIECNE The groves of oak, the serried lines T . ¥ ~ Of tho red-trunk'tl lifting pines, If I ever walk again The kittle lakes thnt stillv lie In the woods of Compiegne, Like down-thrown fragments of the \\hat a difference there will be! sky, I am sure that every tree, Will bo hallow'd by the thought Every flower, each foot of soil. Of tho men who noblv fought; Will recall the soldier's toil, And beauty will be beautified The stress and horror of the fight, Bv memory of those who died, The courage which defeats dismay, If* I over walk again Of those who struggled in the light In tho woods of Compiegne.
