Plain and Fancy-dress Social
On Monday evening the local celebrations were brought to a successful termination with a plain and fancydress social in the Garrison Hall. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather experienced, there was a very large gathering. All parts of the district were represented, there being quite a large number from Queenstown. A number of fancy costumes were worn, and these created no end of interest, and in some cases a good deal of amusement. Proceedings opened with the singing of a verse of the National An- ' them. About eighty couples cook part in the grand march, which was led off by the Mayor and Mayoress. Excellent music was supplied by Stevenson's orchestra, while Messrs F. F. Dunlop and S. Peacock efficiently oarried out the duties of M.Cs. During the evening songs were contributed by Misses 0. Preston and E. Mayne, and Miss -O'Leary (Lower Shotover) gave two zeoitations, and each of these items were greatly appreciated. An abundand supply of refreshments was provided, and the la~dies in charge of this department are to be congratulated on their good work. A most successful ' social was brought to a close at 8.
