THE ARGENTINE.
The Argentine has progressed amazingly during the past five years. At one time Australasian pastoralists feared the great increase of sheep there but the large estate owners prefer cattle for beef export, and American meat trusts now control a lot of the meat. Four Jewish firms are said to monopolise the grain export, and are able to buy at their own prices for shipment. Linseed is extensively grown, and alfa alfa for hay for winter feed. Sugar is largely grown in the north, and also tobacco in the semitropical regions. Land is very dear, and early settlers do not pay tax on the unearned increment, or ordinary income tax either. The population of Buenos Airies (“ 8.A." as it is familiarly known by) is one and a half millions, and the whole country is exceedingly prosperous. The railway journey across the Continent to Valparaiso in the Pacific occupies thirty-eight hours from 8.A., and the express trains are most luxuriously appointed. The cost of living is very high. Cattle men and horse and sheep breeders pay any price for good stud animals, and they get the best from Great Britain, irrespective of coat.
