SPORTING NOTES.

At the sale of thoroughbred horses at Wingatui on the 4th inst., the Americanbred horse Mohawk, by Mexican-Maxine Elliot, was purchased by Mr E. M. Paterson of Ayrburn. The price paid was 75 guineas. At a meeting held at Alexandra recently, it was decided that a trotting club be formed to be called the Otago Central Trotting Club. Sir William Fraser was elected patron, Mr A. Anderson president, and no less than 73 vice-presidents were appointed. Included in the list are the local sports, Messrs John Henderson. A. Jopp and W. Chnrstain. The membership fee was fixed at J6I Is, to be paid within one month. There were record attendances at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting, held on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of last week. The sum of ,£97,607 10s was put through the totalisator for three days, as compared with £50,815 for last year’s two days’ meeting. A well-known Auckland resident, who was with the New Zealand Forces in the fighting at Passchendaele, had a novel experience on the first day of the A.R C. meeting at Ellerslie. In a parcel of one pound notes that came into his possession as the result of totalisator investments, he found one with this inscription on its back : “ This note was carried into the front line trench at Passchendaele, and presented to the Y.M.C.A. in France in exchange for war loan tickets by C. W. Reeves, 51,193, N.Z E.F., 21/3/1918.” —Auckland Star.
