SOLDIERS’ RETURN.

Welcome-home Social at Gibbston. There was a large attendance at the social held in the schoolhouse, Gibbston, on Wednesday evening, 21st inst., to welcome home Lieut. William J. Leslie and Driver Archibald Baker, All parts of tbe district were represented, and there was a large number of returned boys present. The schoolhouse was most tastefully decorated for the occasion. Mr Joseph Miller presided, and shortly before the supper adjournment, said that on behalf of the Gibbston people he was pleased to extend a hearty welcome to the two guests of the evening. Although Driver Baker was not a native of Gibbston, he had spent a good deal of bis time there before enlisting with the Main Body, and Gibbston people were pleased to welcome him back. Lieut. Leslie was a native of Gibbston, and that he had done his duty nobly and well was evidenced by the fact that, enlisting as a private, he had gained his oomnyssion while on service. Mr Miller wished the two men every prosperity in the future. He then called on Miss D. Cowan to pin the customary medal on Lieut. Leslie, and Miss Enright to place a wristlet watch on Driver Baker (who had been previously presented with a medal ■at Arrowtown). After the Rev. J. Rattray had made a few supporting rerharks, “ They are jolly good fellows ” was heartily sung by the audience, after which the two recipients suitably responded. During the evening songs were contributed by Mrs A. Scott, Misses Enright, G. Preston and D. Cowan, Rev. J. Rattray, Messrs J. Dakers and Geo. Stevenson, and Rev. J, Rattray played a cornet solo.
