PERSONAL.
Mr and Mrs Peter Reid (Lower Shotovar) leave to-day on a holiday trip to Australia. Dr Stewart, who had been spending a fortnight's holiday in Cbristohurob, returned to Queenstown on Saturday evening last. Mr W. H. Browne, manager of the Winton branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is spending a short holiday | in the Lakes District. Mr James Hendry, who was for many years chief inspector of schools in Southland has been appointed tarnporary inspector for Otago. Mr T. Pryde, secretary of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and Mr Gockburn, local representative on the Board, paid a visit to Arrow ou Friday last. Messrs J. Grant (Lower Shotover), D. Gosgrove (Arrowtown), and John Hamilton (Queenstown) left on Monday for Trentham to join the Eighteeentb Reinforcements. Mr Win Mayne (Lake Hajes) left yesterday to join the same contingent. Word was received yesterday by Mr Samuel McSkimming, of Queenstown, of the death of his only son, Private Samuel McSkhnming. Private McSkimming, who was twenty-one years of age, left the dominion with the Fifth Reinforcements, and was with the New Zealand forces in Gallipoli. The advice received by his parents stated that he died from a gunshot wound in the heal, and presumably the casualty occurred in the North of France. The sympathy of many friends throughout the Lakes district will ba extended to Mr and Mrs McSkimming and family in their sad bereavement.
Mrs Brooke, of the Post Office at R)slyn, has received notice of her transfer to the Education Department. S ie Las been promoted to the position of manager of the Industrial School, Auckland, and district agent for the I ifant Life Protection Act for Auckland and Taranaki. Mrs Brooke resided for some at Queenstown, and iier many friends in this district wili bo pleaded to learn of her pro* motion.
