A TRAM SMASH.

Causes a Sensation. A tram smash occurred in Sydney on Saturday afternoon last, and caused a sensation in the centre of the city. A car was mounting the bill at King street when the brakes tailed. The car ran back, and, dashing across Castlereagh and Pitt streets, collided with auother car near George street. The spectacle of a car running on the wrong line and at a furious pace caused consternation. Some of the passengers were looking anxiously from the doors, and others were preparing to jump. A woman screaming attracted the attention of hundreds in the crowded streets, and when the runaway crossed Castle reagh street, the crowd ran after it as though joining in a chase. The warn ing shouts enabled the driver of a car at the intersection of Pitt street to stop in time to avoid a right angle collision The runaway had its ironwork twisted badly and the woodwork smashed to splinters. The damage was so extensive that it was surprising that no fatalities occurred. Fourteen people j were injured.
