A pleasing function took place atth* Cromwell racecourse on the morning of tbtt second day's raca3 (says the Argus), when the officials and members ol the Cromwell Jockey Club took the opportunity of expressing ;heir appreciation of Mr John Kane'e association w th the Club, he having recently resigntd from the office of president. Mr Er, Jolly (preisden&i in pr:senting Mr Kaae with a gold-mounted walking stick, suitably inscribed, referred to Mr Kane's long association with the Club, extending over a period of more than 80 years, and expressed the wish that M JKaite would coccinue to enjoy health and prosperity. Mr Pavelitch was for many years a wellknown and popular goldSelds' traveller, and he and the other relatives of deceased have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sad bereavement. The Southland 'papa.'.? record the death ou Saturday last of Mr Wm. Todd, ore of the oldest, most widely known aad most highly esteemed citizens of Invercargill. Deceased carried on an auctioneering and commission agency business for a great many years. The Southland Times says: " Mr Todd remaina3 in Victoria about 10 years, and then in 1863 voyaged to New Zealand in ;he steamer Gothenburg, and came up the New Kiver to Invercargill in the little steamer Euby. Returning to Invercargill about two year.? later, he entered the employment of Mr G. W. Benney, auctioneer, in the Princa of Wales rooms and yards, eventually taking over the business on his own account.." Herdman (Attorney-general) left Wellington for Dunedin, whence be will proceed I hrough Ofcago Cantral to Queenstown. He will spend a short holiday there, and then inspect the gaols at Invercargill, Dunec'.ia, and Timaru, and also the treoplanting camp at Hanraer. He will be absent from Wellington about a fortnight. The Hon H. D. Bell, Minister of Internal Affairs, will accompany Me Herdman on the trip to Queenstown, but will return to Wellington after the holic lays.
