The annual meeting of the Wakatipu Licensing Bench will take place at Queenstown on Saturday next at 12 noon. An extra half per cent all round will be paid on deposits by the Banks doing business in the Dominion as from Saturday Ist inst. The hockey match, High Sclnol v Seniors, will not take place on Monday next, June 3rd, owing to a number of players being absent. In the match Australia v. South Afiica the former made 448 in their fitst innings— Kelleway 114, Bardsloy 121. South Africa three wickets down for 42. The next match takes place at Arrowtown on Wednesday next. We need scarcely remind our readers of the entertainment to-morrow evening in aid of the Arrow District High School funds. As will bo seen in our advertising columns an attractive programme has been arranged of both adult and children’s items. The pupils have boon carefully trained, and will, without doubt, give a good account of themselves. Messrs Cotter Bros, report having held a most successful sale of Mrs Braden’s stock, farm implements, furniture, etc., at Frankton on Tuesday last. A 4-yr-old draught mare brought .£29 10s (purchased by Mr T, Houston), a hack £2O (purchased by Mr G. Neilson), while an 8-yr-old gelding was passed in at £2B. Cows brought up to £G los, pigs £1 15s to £1 17s 6d, while farm implements realised fair values. Exceptionally good prices were obtained for the furniture and effects. A plot has boon discovered at San Diego showing that six members of the Industrial Workers of the world had been selected to shoot tho Mayor and other civic officers, because representatives of tho Industrial Workers were prevented by physical force, from entering the town. With flour at £8 15s per ton and the high prices at present ruling for wheat, it is freely asserted that Dunedin millers are running mills at a loss. One miller stated on Friday (says tho Southland News) that ho reckoned that ho was losing £4O per week with his present diminishing output, and ho would have to consider the question of closing his mill until wheat became cheaper or flour dearer. Many thousands of innocent v-ctims of the coal strike are deeply grateful to the people of New Zealand, who made it possible for them to spend a less miserable Easter than they otherwise must have done (writes the Daily Times’ London correspondent). The High Commissioner utilised tho money, as requested by cable, for tho assistance of sufferers in the districts most badly affected. The matter is now in the hands of the Goldmine Owners Association and the Federation of Labor, and will probably bo settled at the same time as the Waihi dispute. At a meeting of the Chalmers Licensing Committee an application by the Dunedin Jockey Club for a conditional license at Wingatui races on June 1 and 3 was refused. Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., presided and Hen. Geo. McLean appeared on behalf of the club.
