The half-yearly meeting of shareholders in the Cromwell Gold Mines Development Company was held at Melbourne on August 28. Sir Henry Weedou presided. The chairman stated that the low-level tunnel from Specimen Gully was in 466 ft, and was reaching an interesting stage, as some of the lines of reefs, such as the Lucknow find Guano, might be intersected within a short distance, though the tunnel still had a long way to go before the Cromwell reef would be reached The whole of the plant was driven by water power, and the tunnel would enable any ore bodies to be worked and treated at" a mLimum of cost. The cjuntry ihrough which the tunnel was being advanced was hard, and progress was consequently slow. As a compensation, however, there would be no after expense for timbering. The report and balance sheet were adopted. A resolution was passed authorising the directors to issue the 5000 reserve shares, with the proviso that the scrip should be offered in the first place to shareholders only at £1 per share. Since the meeting work has continued satisfactorily at the tunnel, the length driven up to the end of August being 507 ft. The country being penetrated is favorable for reefs.
