Applications have been invited for the position of sole teacher of the Macetown School. Salary £l2O, with residence.

At a meeting of the Olutha County Council on Friday Mr John Ramsay, of Gore, and formerly Manager of the Arrow River Gold Mining Company, was appointed county engineer. Applications, numbering 14, were received from all over the South Island. Mr Ramsay has had considerable experience in bridging and road work and in mining operations. We congratulate Mr Ramsay on his appointment.

On Tuesday evening, at Milton, (says the Daily Times) Mr Charles L. Grant, late proprietor of the Milton Mirror, was, prior to his departure with his family for New Plymouth, where he has secured an appointment on the staff of the Evening News, presented with a substantial purse of sovereigns. The Mayor (Mr J. A. Duthie) made the presentation, and a number of representative business and professional men paid high tribute to his sterling qualities as a journalist and a citizen- daring his life in Milton. The proceedings were very hurriedly arranged, only a few hours being available in which to get the social and presentation carried out, Mr Grant having to return to New Plymouth—where he has been during the past month—at a much earlier date than was expected. Mr Grant carries away the good wishes for his future success of a very large circle of friends. Probate has been granted of the will of the late Mrs Robert Chapman, of Dunedin, The estate is valued at about <£Bo,ooo. The gross value of the estate of the late Elizabeth O’Kane, of Mosgiel, is estimated at about £25,000.

Ci\ Cole, Duuedin’s Mayor-elect, paid a visit to Queenstown on Saturday. On Tuesday, 26th inst., the Prime Minister received a large number of congratulatory messages, the occasion being Sir Joseph’s fifty-fourth birthday.
