In addition to the farewell tendered Mr R. H. Turton, S.M., by the legal profession, reported in our last issue, Mr Turton was presented by the citizens of Greymouth with a gold watch and purse of sovereigns prior to his departure for Masterton. These farewells speak volumes for the popularity and ability of Mi Turton on the Coast. Owing to illness Dr Douglas was not permitted to return home on Saturday last. The doctor contracted a severe cold in Dunedin, but we are pleased to say he is recovering from the attack and expects to be back in Queenstown towards the end of the week. “ * Mr Hume, of Geraldine, has been appointed conductor of the Arrow Brass Band at a salary of £4O per annum. He is an expert euphoneum player. Mr Wm. Hale, a. one-time resident of Queenstown, who has been living in Melbourne for the last ten years, has been paying a visit to Queenstown for the last few days looking after his interests here and seeing old friends. Mr Hale is enjoying good healthy—Mail. Mb Guy N. Morris, clerx in the Warden’s office, Queenstown, left Queenstown for Wellington on Monday. On Thursday night Mr Morris’s friends met him in Eichardt’s Hotel and presented him with a purse of sovereigns. Mr G. Searle made the presentation, and referred to Mr Morris’ many excellent qualities as a citizen and a true sport, and to the loss the town was sustaining by his departure. Mr Hiddleston, Mr Gudgeon, and Mr Crawshaw also referred in eulogistic terms to Mr Morris’ many good qualities. Mr Morris, in responding, said he thought he did not deserve all the compliments that had been showered upon him. He had only triefl to do what was right to the best of liis judgment. The many friends’of Mr W. Monteith, of Pembroke, will regret to hear that he is in very bad health, his condition being serious.
