SUBMARINE DISTURBANCE.
Terrific Explosion. Captain Rosa, of the schooner Vsabel, arrived at Auckland from Tonga on Saturday. He reports that when in the locality of the submarine disturbance previously reported, the chart showing 10011 fathoms, a terrific explosion was heard, and several of the crew declared that the vessel had been struck by something. The iiri'c went aloft and repotted shod water ahead and on both bows. The Ysabel was then running before a north-east gale, and the position was serious. Another shock shook the vessel from stem to stern. The pumps were used, but drew no water, and the shoals reported proved only cloudy water. The smell of sulphur was very pronounced. The third and last shock was experienced at 6 p.m., as darkness was setting in. The locality was latitude 21.18 south long. 175.47 west. As it was a very dark, rainy night, nothing could be seen as to the nature of the disturbance.
