MINING.

The Waihi Grand Junction Company crushed 3,705 tons of fire for £5,911 its 6d". For several weeks past, there has been almost an entire cessation of sluicing operations on the West Coast, owing to the want of water. The time, however, has been utilised in effecting necessary repairs to races and plant. Last week there was a welcome breaking of the draught, and work, it may bo presumed, will again be active in the West Coast mining industry.

A remarkable development is going on in mining in Algeria. Some of the zinc and lead mines opened last year have boon successful, and the shares have doubled, and in some instances more than Quadrupled, in value. Mines of mercury have been opened this year, and tire said to pi’omise well, A feature in this department is tho resumption of shipments of iron oie to the United States. About 15,000 tons have been shipped from BeniStf, and largo shipments are announced for the present year. The extraction of phosphate rock in Algeria in 1900 exceeded that of 1905.

The Glenorchy correspondent of the Southland Times writes ;—“ The scheelite mine is still going ahead steadily with a continuous output, the battery haring been stopped only now and then, when Ice blocked the water race, and a month ago for a weak for the purpose of installing an extra concentrator, which is saving a lot more of the best and finest particles of scheelite, which without it would be lost in the water from the first table. Prospecting and opening up at several other claims is progressing still. Messrs Birley and Co. have started to make a track to their reef. Messrs Valpy Bros, were successful enough during the last few weeks to secure nearly a ton of scheelite out of the bottom of a gorge on one of the creaks.”

Messrs Hunter and Prescott, iributors in the Hauraki Freeholds mine, Coromandel, have had a parcel of 12 tons of ore treated for a return of 114oz of retorted gold, valued at about £330, or an average value per ton of £27 10s. It is probable that a dividend of 2s per share will be declared by the Electric Company to bo payable on the 31st inst. A correspondent to the Alexandra Herald writes :—“ Mining in all its branches is quiet in the Lakes district at the present time. At Macetown there are two privately-owned quartz mines, which are being profitably worked by M‘Kay and party and Anderson and party, respectively. A large area of country bearing proved payable auriferous reefs has been held for many years by Mr J. Farrell who has been vainly trying to float a large company on the London market. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick, and the local people who have loyally stood by him during these years are now wondering if it is advisable is the tost interests of the district to continue this waiting policy. These reefs should be made available in the immediate future to the general public. The district abounds in reefs but the area mentioned is the pick of the lot. Sluicing is also carried on at Macetown,
