Jenkins, jun., the two members appointed to see what support farmers would give to an owner bringing a draught stallion to the district report that they have a guarantee of close on 60 mares now. Their report will be received at Saturday's meeting of tho A. and P. Society. Mi: George Lanham, goldfields' representative for Messrs Bing Harris and Co., Dunedin, and Miss Edith Willis, of Canterbury, were united in the bonds of wedlock at Knox Church, Christchurch, recently. Mr Lanham's many friends on the goldfields will join with his friends in other parts of Otago in wishing him and his good lady every happiness and prosperity. A Wyndiiam farmer has sold 150 tons of turnips for consignment to drought-stricken North Otago. An Edendalo farmer has similarly disposed of 100 tons. Truck-loads of this class of fodder aro being railed away daily. —Farmer. Tun traction engine used in connection with Mr G. Stevenson's merry-go-round, has been utilised by a number of farmers for working chaff-cutters and threshing mills in this district. The driver had no difficulty in negotiating Tobin's track with the engine. Traction engines, after the present trials, will no doubt be more largely used in this district in the near future. Mr Mepham, representative and tuner of the Dresden Piano Company, Dunedin, will be in Arrowtown in about a fortnight's time. Mr Mepham is an excellent tradesman, and owners of pianos and organs would do well to have their instruments attended to now, as it will be some time before a tuner will be round again. All orders left with tho local agent, Mr P. do la Perrelle, will be attended to. We (Cromwell Argus) have been informed that a large oil launch will be placed on the Tlawea Lake at an early date, as arrangements are now being made for the cartage from Dunedin. This will be tho . moans of securing a number of settlers in the l'ich Hunter valley at the head of this beautiful lake, as those interested in putting on the launch intend starting a flaxmill there. It is stated there is a large amount of flax in the valley. A man named Thomas Miller, who keeps a grocer's store in Dunedin, was arrested on Friday on a charge of wilfully setting fire to a five roomed dwelling owned by him, and tenanted by a man named Keid at North East Valley. The house, which was temporarily unoccupied at the time of the fire, was insured in the Royal Office for £225. Farmers, rabbiters, and others having goods for disposal in the shape of rabbitskins, wool, calfskins, tallow, etc, will be interested to know that Messrs J. N. Merry and Co., merchants and importers of Dunedin, will be glad to enter into communication with them with a view to buying their goods Messrs Merry and Co., guarantee to give top prices for whatever is sent forward. Consignments sent to them will be at once attended to, Messrs Merry and Co., guaranteeing to send on the day following receipt of goods, account sales for the goods, together with cheque in full settlement, and without any deduction for commission. Messrs Merry's address is South Crawford Street, Dunedin. The coursing meeting at Invercargill last week could not be finished, tho supply of hares having run out. The stakes had to be divided. Messrs Baird and Dagg had rather bad luck with their dogs in one or two of the events, but they got into the prize list with Fickle Jade. Unfortunately the hares were not well trained for the escapes, but this will be improved upon next year. The general arrangements of tho club were first-class and in Mr Paapo it has a capable and energetic secretary. Since returning home the ownors have had tho misfortune to lose Fickle Jade through inflammation. A .motor car service between Lumsden and Te Anau during the summer months will be a boon to tourists. It is expected that the Government'will establish such a service in time for the coming season. This will replace the coach service, and will allow the journey of 50 miles being made in four or five hours, wdiereas at present it means a good day's drive. A bridge has now been constructed over the Mararoa River, so that motorists need suffer no inconvenience should the river be high. As an indication of tho rapid rise in land values in Wellington city, a representative of the Potono Chronicle was last week shown a letter in which tho sum of ,£3OO per foot was offered for a 50 feet frontage on Lambton Quay. Tho site is a fairly central one and has a couple of old buildings erected thereon. Tho present owner bought the property at auction 10 years ago for £SOOO, and was called a fool for doing so. To treble in value in a decade is convincing evidence of Wellington's progress.
