Mr W. Fraser, M.II R. for Wakatipu, was banqueted by the townspeople of Waikaka on Thursday as a mark of their appreciation of his long parliamentary record, with special reference to his services in initiating the scheme which has resulted in the commencement of the Gore-Waikaka Railway. The Star's Wellington " special" telegraphs that the Hon. VV. Hall-Jones, seeking rest and change, leaves Wellington on July 8 by the steamer Kaipara for London via Cape Horn, accompanied by Mrs Hall-Jones and Mr Schmidt, private secretary. Mr F. W. Barrett, of the literary staff of the Levin paper, was seriously injured by an explosion of acetylene gas, and may not recover. The lijjht had gone out, and' he went to the gasometer in the yard while smoking, the escaping gas causing a tremendous explosion.
