Lake County Press. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY

Arrowtown: May 2, 1907. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The trust that’s given thee guard, and to thyself be just.

Frosty weather and fine days are the order of things just now. The duck-shooting season opened yesterday. So far we have not heard of any big bags, although grey duck is plentiful enough. At a special meeting of the Arrow District Hospital Trust yesterday, Miss H. Graham was appointed to the position of secretary, out of sis applicants. Mr J. Grant, of Lake Hayes, had the misfortune to have one of bis draught horses badly staked the other day. Mr; Grant ig doubtful if he can save the animal which he values at £GO. The Murihiki, Mataura, and VVakatipu Mounted Rifles fire a triangular match on the Arrow range on the 21th May. The visiting teams will attend the W.M.R. ball at night, for which preparations are already in progress. At a sub-committee meeting of Lake County Council held in the Press office on Saturday afternoon last two tenders wore received for approaches to the Kawarau Punt, viz., P. J. Marshall TlO2 Ss Gd and A. Barnett £94. The tender of A. Barnett was accepted. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a bowling club was held in the Press office on Saturday evening last. There was a good attendance, and His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. Mr Ramsay, convener of the meeting, explained the objects of the meeting and gave information as to the probable cost of making a green. It was decided to form a bowling club to be styled “The Arrow Bowling Club.” Mr H. M'Kibbin was elected president, Mr Perrolle secretary pro tern. The President and Mr Webb were appointed to see what support the public would give to the project. Over £2O was promised in the room. A meeting will be held on Saturday evening when a report will be received as to the probable support from the public and the election of officers will be proceeded with. We hope to see a good attendance of both young and old at the meeting.

A Wyxdiiam farmer refused £2O an aero for his 200 acre farm. A Maxawatu farmer has <lO acres of flax, from which he expects to make .£BOO every three years ixj royalties. A Loxdok cable message states that Sir J. G. Ward and family return by the s.s. Mooltan, sailing on May 21. At Bald Hill Flat (says the Star) the crops are only now being cut. The majority of the crops came on wonderfully well during the past two months. TiiK total, receipts at the Exhibition tearooms were £10,771 ;">3 Id. The lavatories earned .£lB2 7s 7d, and the cloak rooms £897 Is -Id. A Maoki near Taihape the other day pleaded guilty as an excuse for not having adiink that a "Presbyterian" order had been taken out against him. A puzzle for you: A ship is twice as old as her boiler was when the ship was as old as the boiler is. When the boiler is as old as the ship is now, the united ages of ship and boiler will be 86. What are their respective ages now? A Kabajika (West Coast) hofcelkeoper has been fined £3 for selling liquor on Sunday to two teams of cricketers. One (after travelling five miles) had dinner at the hotel, the losers of the match paying Is Gd per head for dinner. Beer was supplied with dinner. The Magistrate held that there was a sale. At a meeting of the Lake County Jockey Club, held on Saturday evening last, it was decided to submit the 13th and 14 th December as the dates for the annual races. Dr Thomson was elected hon. auditor, in place of Mr J. S. Evans, resigned. At the Broken Hill (N.S.W.) Police Court, Robert Waterman, an old time jockey, was charged with attempting to commit suicide. He pleaded guilty but said he had no intention of committing suicide. He felt very bad and was gasping for breath, but after striking himself on the head with a tomahawk he felt much better. He was sentenced to two moaths' hard labor, the sentence to bo suspended. Dubinct a heavy thunderstorm at Wharparilla (Vic.) on Saturday week, Hugh Mackay, who was engaged in fencing a paddock a quarter of a mile from the homestead, was struck dead by lightening. The left leg of the man's tjouseas was ripped open and his boot pulled completely off his foot. The man's hat was shattered to pieces, his shirt was torn, and there were a number of bruises on the body. Mr Bolt, M.L.C. died suddenly while returning from Waipori, after the ceremony of turning on the electric power for Dunedin city. In company with the members of the Council he walked up a hill, and evidently overexerted himself, as after he had walked about a quarter of a mile he collapsed. On getting into the trap he seemed to revive, but as soon as a start was made he fell back dead. He had responded to the toast of Parliament at the luncheon early in the day, and was then apparently in best of health and spirits. He was about 69 years of age. We desire to draw the attention of our readers to the advertisement of Alex. Thompson and Sons, the wellknown sailmakers and manufacturers of horse and cattle covering, oilskins, tents, etc., of Princes Street, Dunedin. It will be noticed by those who have been in the habit of dealing with this old established firm that Mr Thompson has taken his two sons into partnership and the name of the firm is now Alex. Thomson and Sons. The firm have quite recently had erected for them extensive new premises in Princes Street, a few doors away from their old premises, which were getting too cramped for their growing business. Messrs Thompson and Sons are manufacturers and patentees of the wellknown " Duplex" and " Premier" horse covers, the demand for which has been so great throughout Otago and Southland, that storekeepers are now stocking them in wholesale quantities. They can also be obtained direct from Thompson and Sons if there is any difficulty in obtaining them locally.
