The trunt dial's given thee guard, and to thystfj he just.

*- . Monday next will be a Bank holiday. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at Wakapuaka on Tuesday. At Napier a man was fined £3O for failing to keep down rabbits. This was a second offence. Active preparations are being made in Queenstown for the reception of the delegates who arrive there next week in connection with the halfyearly meeting of the Ancient Order of Foresters. In honor of the occasion a grand social (advertised in this issue) will be held. Messrs Reid and McDowell and Mr J. Reid have received orders from Wright, Stephenson and Co., for 250 tons each of the lime deposits on their lands at Lake Hayes. The quality of the lime is said to be excellent. This may yet develop into a big industry and give work to many,

Mark Maxton, of Greytown, was fined £lO last week for conducting a sale by auction without a license. Dowie, the " prophet " died at Zion City on the 10th inst. He was one of the most remarkable figures of his time. Government statistics say there are 3,629 borses of all classes in Lake County, 400 pigs, 174,005 sheep, 4151 cattle. , Mr Sheargold, representative lor Messrs Herbert Haynes and Co., will be in Arrowtown about the 18th March. -Advt. • _ The marriage is announced in JJunedin of Miss F. Allan, daughter of Captain Allan, late of Pembroke, and Mr J. Faulks. The New' Zealand cricketers defeated M CO. team at Wellington by 56 runs. Scores: N.Z. 165 and 249; M.CC. 160 and 198. At the class examinations at the Otago University Mr L. Mcßride (Frankton) secured a second class pass in materia medico. Owing to his evading a subpoena to testify in St. Louis in a suit against the Standard Oil Company, a warrant has been issued for Mr J. D. Rockefeller's arrest. ' . In the railway returns for the month of February the revenue from the Lake Wakatipu steamers is £728, and the expenditure £4l7—giving the percentage of revenue*93.oo. - - Mr Mathieson, in the early days a farmer at Miller's Flat, paid Arrowtown a visit last week and renewed old acquaintances. Although now in advanced years, he is still hale and hearty; '-' .- A Napier telegram says i—A party of eight, including Mr, Hill, Inspector of Schools, v was attacked by ptomaine poisoning on Saturday, but .prompt medical aid prevented serious consequences. ■ *. Mr J. Dickson, for the last two years in the employ of Mr Jos. Jenkins, left Arrowtown on 'Monday last for Oamaru, where lie will follow his trade as a baker. During Mr Dickson's residence in Arrowtown he made many friends by his genial disposition, and always assisted in local entertainments. 'Mr Dickson has the hearty good wishes of the Arrowtown people for his future success. : Tun merit of Lipton's renowned teas has been testified to in an unmistakable fashion at the New Zealand Exhibition. Messrs Harty and Co., of Dunedin, distributing agents for Lipton's teas, have been advised that Lipton's teas secured a special gold medal (being the highest award) for Ceylon Teas, also a special gold medal (highest special award) for fancy Ceylon Teas. This is certainly a good record. At the Cromwell Magistrate's Court, the Police "prosecuted Max Kasielke for shooting a cow valued at £7. The Argus says that the Magistrate said it was a very serious offence, but taking into , consideration the accused was very much annoyed by the cow breaking into his garden not impose a severe penalty. He also warned the accused of the great risk he incurred in taking the law into his own hands, and fined him £l2; also to pay the value of the cow (£7), and costs £2, in default three months. A Perth telegram says in connection with the charge of baby-farming against Mrs Mitchell, evidence was given that out of 82 infants placed in her charge 29 died. \ The cause > of death in nearly all cases was marasmus. A witness deposed that, 1 while staying with Mrs Mitchell, the latter told him his child would always be a nuisance and keep him poor. If he would give her £lO and 10s weekly she would get rid of the child. She would give it opening medicine, or stick a hatpin in its heart. We know that rabbits breed eleven months out of the year. We have also heard the story of the curate who innocently asked a mother the age of her child and on learning that:it was three months old, thoughtlessly asked if it were the youngest. But the following from an English paper surely supplies an unique record of prolificacy in ewes : —A horned ewe, the property of Mr A. Coles, of Axe Farm, Axminster, has given birth to ten lambs within 50 weeks. Four were born in November, 1905, three in April, 1906, and.the same number in November, 1906. All the lambs are reported healthy and doing well.
