*- The animal meeting of the Arrow Cricket Club will bo hold in the Phess office on Saturday evening next at 8 sharp, All members and intending members are requested to be present. Wo hope to see a good muster. Tin: billiard tournament at the Ballarat Hotel finished last week and resulted as follows :—A. Delargey Ist, G. Dudley 2nd, and A. Smilh 3rd. The prize for the biggest break was won by G Dudley, who made 29. A trial of the latest improved Massey Harris throe-furrow disc plough will be held in Mr James Eeid's paddock on Saturday afternoon next at 2.30. Farmers and others are requested to attend and see this up-to-dato plough work. The annual social in connection with St. John's Presbyterian Church Sunday School was hold in the church on Wednesday evening, 29th ult. Songs and choruses were given by the pupils, while musical items and short addresses were given by the adult members. A most enjoyable evening was spent. Word was received in Arrowtown yesterday of the death of Mrs Robert Lawton, of Dunedln, and formerly of Arrowtown. Deceased lady was well advanced in years, and had been in failing health for some time. Local residents will receive the with feelings of the deepest regret, and their sympathy will go out to Mr and Miss Lawton in their sad trial,

Canterbury defeated Southland by 14 to 8. The final football match of the season between the Arrow and Qneenstown clubs will be played on the Arrow ground on Wednesday afternoon next. Mk William Fraser, M.H.R., foe Wakatipu, delivered a very interesting lecture at the Victoria College, Wellington, en Thursday last, the subject being : " The early sixties in Otago," some personal reminiscences. The lecture was very much appreciated by the. large number present. At Wanganui on Monday Leonard Ashwin, found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the death of a boarder staying at a house run by him, and which he set on fire, was sentenced by the Chief Justice to ten years' hard labor. The charge of arson against him was held over. In the Timaru to Christchurch road race 181 started. Several spills occurred, and one rider had his collarbone broken. A coekespondknt forwarded to us (says the Daily Times) from Pembroke, a sample of ore which was found near Cardi'ona. Our correspondent was inclined to believe the ore was copper, but the discoverer thought :r was some-. thing more valuable. We submitted the sample to Professor Park, director of the Otago School of Mines, who has kindly supplied the following information ;—"The sample of ore sent for determination is a fine example of the iron pyrite in the cubical form. This.ore is largely used in Europe and America for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but has no commercial value in New Zealand at the present, time. The chief point of interest in connection with the occurrence of iron pyrite is that it is one of the constant associates of gold in gold-bearing ore deposits." Ik his report on the hospitals of the colony, Dr McGregor refers, inter alia, to the local institutions as follows : Arrowtown : Number treated during the year 81—53 males, 28 females. Outdoor patients: Individual case 3 78,. attendances 116. Subscriptions and donations amounted to £97 17s; patients' payments to £lB3 18s Bd. Visited 3rd September, 1905—The patients numbered six on the date of the visit—s males and one female.. Miss McLeod, who has held -office fora year is a capable nurse. I am glad to'find that Dr- Thomson has decided to remain in charge of the hospital.. Queenstowu: Number of patients treated during the year 81—49 males, 82 females. Visited 23rd September, 1905.—The outside of the hospital needs painting,, and the work is to be put in hand. forthwith. The inside is to be distempered. The former matron left, about three months ago and has been* succeeded by Miss Clare.
