ARROW PUBLIC SCHOOL.

This school resumed work, after tho usual yearly holiday of six weeks, on Monday the sth inst., with a satisfactory attendance. As no particulars of general interest were published immediately after the break-up, a few may not now be out of place. We give, first, the honor list, showing tho class positions in tho school : Preparatory.—l, John Wilcox (dux) ; 2, Ina Romans ; 3, Tom Fisher ; 4, Ellis Jenkins ; 5, Willie Jenkins. Standard 6. —l, George Rushton (dux of school) 1715; 2, Bertie Paton 1714; 3, Tom. Reid 1086 ; Funny Webb 1615. Standard 7.—1, Maggie Connor ; 2, Lucy Preston ; 3, Willie McDowell. Generally sneaking prizes were awarded to the four whose names stand highest on the lists ; others, getting prizes, obtained by them for some special excellence. First-class good attendance certificates were won by Ethel Fletcher, George Fletcher, Mary McSkinmiing, Jessie Mackie and Willie Payne ; while second class certificates were secured by Maggie Connor, Adelaide Rushton, John Fisher, Tom Powley, Jas. Wilcox, Alfred Wilcox, Annie Soutter and John Butel.

On closing day the fact was referred to that several really lost their places, and one lost the position of dux of his class, by being absent at one of the examinations held quarterly for mails, and the head-master availed himself of the circumstance to impress on parents the duty of regular attendance. Mr Orr also alluded to the gratifying fact that Henrietta Smith who won a scholarship from this school three years before, was in 1905 dux i>f the Invercarcill High School on the girls' side, and that only one from the school this year carried sufficient pluck to face the scholarship examination in December. (This scholar, Bertie Paton, has .since proved successful and Won a scholarship of the value of £"SO tenable for two years). These facts ought to kindle ardour for learning in others, and induce them to aim high in the race of life. Thus, though we live in the back-blocks we are really in as good a position educationally, to secure our fair share of the prizes of the higher kind as if we lived in or near the larger centres, if only our young people could possess themselves of a reasonable allowance of red-hot purpose.
