THE WHEELS OF JUSTICE.

A lengthy case took place at tho Magistrates Court, Queenstown, on the Bth inst when P. McKenna sued J. K. Birley for the return of a horse valued at £25. Mr Evans for plaintiff, Mr Turton for defendant. Tho plaintiffs evidence was to the effect that he was intoxicated and did not do any business regarding the stile of the horse. The evidence for the defence was that plaintiff was sober when he sold the horse. This was borne out by witnesses The Magistrate held that the sale was made when nlaintiff was sober, and gave judgment for defendant with costs £l4 10s. In the case of William James Southgate, captain of the Kapanui (which sunk after a collision in Auckland Harbour, six lives being lost), indicted before the Supreme Court for manslaughter, die jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and the accused was discharged. The jury recommended that coastal steamers should be more efficiently manned, and that tho Marine Department should decide as to which harbors the narrow-channel regulations should apply.
