LAPSE OF MEMORY.
When Lord Eldon was Chancellor, his house in Queen-square caught fire, and to safe, the seal from robbers he buried it in his garden, but unfortunately forgot the exact spot. One iB not surprised at this temporary lapse of memory on the part of great lawyers, says the " Telegraph," and it procot cis to tell another story:—A gentleman who to considerable eminence in the State, and who previous to his elevation was living in til. George's-jquare, Edinburgh, wa« once found early .in the morning Becking in vain for his residence. He appealed to a housemaid cleaning a doorstep. " Lassie, can you tell me which is Johnnie 'h house ? " he asked. " 13h, mon," replied the girl; "but you'io Johnnie yersclf " " That's not what I want to know," waß the angry retort, " 1 want to know where Johnnie ——'s hou«e is ? "
