NEVIS.

(lake county press correspondent.) We are having quite a time of general and all round improvements. The County Council are gravelling our street and main road. A new post office is also being erected at a much more central place for the general public, but, like all changes, it does not suit till persons. The old office was most inconveniently small, being only sft by Bft, with a low doorway that a man over sft tall is liable to have holes knocked in bis forehead in entering or leaving. However, we. hope to see the postmistress installed in the new office in a few days. The weather, which has been simply perfect for the last three weeks, has at length broken up, and the rain is now coming down, and the crops, which are mostly in the are getting nicely soaked. There is, fortunately } not much danger of the heat after this causing the grain to shoot.

All the material for the Ngapara No. 3 dredge is pretty well on the "round, and she will soon be tooting her horn for the morning shift. Bunny is coming in for a very quiet time this summer, but I suppose his time of peace will soon be over, as the übiquitous rabbit inspectors are beginning to wake up, and are already on the warpath. What a glorious trade in frozen rabbits is being scotched by these autocrats, whom our laws (shame on them) arm with more authority than the very magistrate who decides, the cases under the Rabbit Act. What satire on our freedom to find that a man who can write himself " rabbit agent " can enforce his private judgment above judge, jury, or witness. I think there is room for the levelling power of the people's Government here. It is enough to make a Radical being beside himself to see thousands of high-, conditioned rabbits patrifying on the ranges and valleys—poisoning both air and water and corrupting the land—and this where men are willing to give a premium for being allowed to catch and transport them to the hungry thousands at Home. I venture to say,, after a practical knowledge of the" working of the Rabbit Act for the last 25 years, that never was public money so completely wasted. It is high time the people who stand behind "the Government demanded, with no uncertain voice, a repeal of thic Act. April 6, 1900.
