Correspendence.
[ Wr. do not identify ourselves with the opinions of our correspondents .] COUNTY MATTERS. Sir, —I read your leader of last issuewith the greatest interest. AlthoughI am with you for most part, I differwith you in respect to the engineer’s, salary. I think the Council would be quite justified in reducing his salary by £50,. that is£3so instead of £4OO as. at present;.at the same time I cannot, see how the workmen can be reduced one penny. The cost of living in this district is so very expensive for one thing, while-on the other hand, 8s a day is little enough pay for the toils of the workmen.. Then, again a man is not likely to do more than 7s worth of work, if his wages are reduced. Perhaps this did not strike the Council. I believe in more equity between employer and employee. The Council had no right to go into committee on such a matter, and the chastisement they received at your hands was quite justifiable. I canassure you, Mr Editor, that over fha large district m which your journal circulates, you have the support and respect of all for your rectitude andliberal ideas in matters for the welfareof the district generally.—I am etc.,
