The weaker woman had to be assisted home. The Brunner Disaster. —The colliery accident at Brunnertou on Thursday is undoubtedly one of the most terrible yet recorded in the annals of New Zealand coalmining. Some sixty-four men, with fully two hundred depending on them, have lost their lives—cut off, as it were, without a moment’s warning. The scene at the colliery after the occurrence is said to have hecu harrowing in the extreme, women*and children being with difficulty kept back from rushing into the tunnel. The intensity of their grief and excitement were terrible, and as the bodies which were recovered were brought to the surface the cries of the relatives were simply heartrending. The greatest sympathy Is felt throughout the colony for the relatives of those who have perished by the explosion, and steps are to bo taken to give monetary relief to those who have lost their breadwinners. We may add that at the Kaitangata explosion in February, 1879, thirty-five men and one boy lost their lives.
