Mesmeric Trance.
Wellington, Feb. 16. On Monday last at 8 p.m,, Kennedy, the mesmerist, placed Frederick Keating in a trance, with the intention of keeping him in that state until 10 p.m. on Saturday. Keating, during the time of his enforced sleep, has been visited by large crowds, the hall in which he was reposing being open day end night. At various time's the sleeping man had been subjected to various tests, all of which failed to wake him. Yesterday he was subjected to a most severe test when Dr Sweet, of Sydney, inserted surgical scissors under Keating’s finger nails and applied strong ammonia to his nostrils without causing reflex action. He declared the man to be in a perfectly fit state for any surgical operation and said he hoped tho day was not far distant when the medical profession would follow the example of the French school of Nancy. Dr Cre°sy, of Nelson, also examined the man and confirmed the former’s statements. Precisely at ten last night in the presence of a large audience, Keating was awakened, apparently none the worse for his long repose.
