Playing against a Cape team Lehmann took eight wickets for seven runs. Sir E. Clarke has been retained for the defence of Dr Jameson. The trial of the political agitators at Pretoria will be resumed in a week. Imperial officers have been sent to Rhodesia to command the Chartered Company’s police. The Times lauds the unity of the Colonies ami their loyality in preparing for defence in case of hostile attack.

A terrible tragedy is reported from Windsor. A widower named Alfred Dales cut the throats of his son, aged fire, and daughter, aged three. Recently an elder daughter preferred a serious charge against her father, which, however, the. evidence failed to establish The girl then refused fro go home and went to live with an aunt. On Saturday night Dales proceeded to the residence of the aunt and told his daughter that if she would not come home he would kill the children.' On the girl going towards home later in the evening she met her father, who asked where she was going. She replied “ Home.” He replied “It is too late. I have already carried out my threat.” Subsequently he surrendered himself to the police. February, 17. In the Great Britain mine, near Amidale, a truck of mullock fell down a shaft a depth of 250 feet, killing Thomas Clark, a son of Dr Clark, of New Zealand. The Albany boiling down works have been totally destroyed by fir". The damage is estimated at £3OOO. The floods are subsiding, and railway traffic is being lesumed, although there is still several breaks in the lines. Brisbane, February 17. A ferry boat at Maryborough, with ten persons aboard, was swept against the piles of the bridge and capsized. All were rescued with the exception of a man named Oliver. The following cable has been received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies :—“ I have received the Queen’s command to express her deep regret at hearing of the Brisbane ferry boat disaster, and her sincere, sympathy with the relatives of the sufferers. T also desire to express my own sympathy and condolence.” A cable message of condobnce Iras also been received from the Premier of New Zealand. Two young sisters named M‘Gee are missing, and it is believed they have been drowned in the Pearl accident.
