Knowdes was sent to Washington on business relating to the school lands of her State, which was pending in the Interior Department. She had to make a presentation of the State’s claim before six heads of law divisions, and finally secured a decision in her favor. Another lady, a Miss Emerson, of San Francisco, has been appointed Commissioner of the United States Court of Land Claims. The position is to some extent judicial. She will take testimony as an examining officer, and will decide whether the statement made befere her an. 1 relevant and material or the opposite. For several years she had conducted a type writing business..
The extent to which women ar ousting men from employment as clerk is becoming a serious matter in Oanad and the United States. If women al sorb the clerical positions as they hav done in France, and clerks cannot Hiv empoyment, it is quite evident tha they cannot afford to marry, unless the; are so fortunate as to find some fenul worker who is able and willing to suj: port them, while they sit at home am and cook the dinner. The whole que« tion is an important and intercstin one, which seems to threaten a pa>'tia revolution in our present social system
