MINING.
The return from the Sew Hoy dredges last week was 930z sdwt retorted gold. A petition is being got up, praying for the resumption of 50 acres of Mr W. Paterson’s freehold land at Crown Terrace. The area of the freehold is 200 acres. Messrs Tall and Feehly have some ground secured from Mr Paterson that would pay for sluicing if they had an outlet. Messrs Hunter and party have also traced gold into the freehold.
There was a big day in the Warden’s Court, Cromwell, last Friday, when the Bannockburn miners (who are idle owing to a refusal to pay the high rents demanded by the water race owners) applied for protec tion for their claims until the “ strike ” is over. The race-owners figured as objectors. The cases were adjourned for 14 days- - Messrs E. Morgan and A. Munday are sinking a shaft on Mr T. M‘Donnell’s land, Arrow Flat, they tainking it likely that there is a lead from Arrow towards Hogan’s Gully. There can bo no question that a great mistake has been made in alienating a large quantity of land that would well pay for mining. We hope these men may strike something payable.
