QUEENSTOWN SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of above Committee was held on Monday evening lust. Present—Messrs S. Dewar (chairman), T. Gilmour, R. Rosa, F. W. F. Geisow, T. Sloan, J. v. d. Walcle, and L. Hotop (secretory). The headmaster’s report for the quarter ending 30ih June, read and adopted, showed the number on the roll to be 126 ; highest attendance, 117 ; lowest, 71 ; average, 109. Two small accounts w.er.e passed for payment.

The Ch firm in stated that, after consulting the headmaster and several tiiemb ns of Committee, the secretary and himself had decided to give the scholars a week’s holiday commencing from that day. That would fit in with the scholarship examinations.— Action approved.

The Chairman also stated that the now desks had arrived, and that all n f, cessarv arrangements had been made for the holding of the scholarship examinations in Ihi school. The inspector (Mr Braik) would be up that night. Mr Geisow : T think it would be as well to take advantage of the presence of Mr Braik, and call his attention to the cl curability of making additions to the headmaster’s residence, it being now too small for the requirements of his family.

After some discussion, the chairman was requested to see Mr Braik on the matter.

A conversation took place regarding Arbor Dav. The secretary suggested that the Oo:nmit l ’c» t-y and co-operate with the Borough Council, and perhaps a day could be fixed to make it a general hj liday. He thought the Borough Council might ho willing to supply the trees, if the Committee un dertook to sen them planted properly ; and, in the event of not bfing able to get their assistance, he would suggest tile planting of poplars and willows in the scrub (which would give them some protection, as it would ho out of the question to go to the expense of fencing.

The members of committee as a whole thought that they had no right to spend the funds of the school to beautify or ornament the town property. It was therefore decided, on thn motion of Mr Rossi, seconded by Mr Waldo—That tlm Chairman anti Mr Gcisow be appointed a committee to wait on the Borough Council and see what can he done for Arbor Day, and report next meeting. Mr Waldo (for the Works Committee) reported having done sundry r pairs, includin'; the putting in of several panes of glass. The Chairman state ! that the manual classes had been formed. They had got the old desks for benches. The, tools had also arrived, and both Mr Davidson and the headmaster had ex pressed th'-msclves ready to commence the class at once. On the proposition of Mr Geisow a vote of thanks was recorded in the mmutes to Mr E. Foord for the use on his tools. The Chairman was also instructed to o' tain all necessaries fur the starting of the classes.

A vote of thanks to the chair ended the meeting.
