The Claud Hamilton, for the safety of which great fears were expressed has turned up safe. ’ Milton, late secretary at the Athenaeum, was to-day committed for trial,' charged' with embezzlement; A miner named John Long met with' an accident in his claim- at Tuapeka Flat last week, and died in the local - hospital yesterday. It is intended to indict Davitt, Daly,, and Keller; for conspiracy. At the Land Board' to-day a letter' was read from Mr Wesley Turton ref erring to the cancellation of License over Run No. 31, Wakatip Depasturing District. The licensee having failed to pay the rent, it was decided to cancel the license under regulations for non-payment of rent. The Chamber of Commerce, Dunedin, met to consider the financial proposals on Monday, and resolved that the property tax was objectionable and' unnecessary, and that the deficiency could be made up by increased duty on sugar and tea, by school-fees, landtax, and proposed increase - in ad valorem duties. PARLIAMENTARY. On Monday night a motion was brought forward in the House of Representatives that Government fi-nancial-proposals were unsatisfactory. There was along debate, and at three in the morning a division was taken. For Government, 17; against, six—majority, 11. The attempt was an utter failure.
