The Arrow Observer, AND LAKES DISTRICT CHRONICLE. Arrowtown, Wednesday, June 2, 1875.

Ihe prospei ity of goldfields townships" depends upon the riches derived from its mines, or more properly speaking? the success of the miner. The 'pros* pects of a mining district are too often falsely lauded up by promoters* of mining swindles, wEich prpspcr with the aid of foreign markets,'' and wlien their schemes are worked out, the crash comes with double force ou those whom these mercenary vagabonds succeed in making tools of. This, of course, puts a, damper oh anyone who mayvhfe of ; a speculative turn of mind,' and makesthem distrust even bona fide offers when brought into the market. SWih- : dies have been perpetrated in this, district to a large extent, and they have tended to make speculators hold back and thereby smothering its mineral resources. Notwithstanding this, a few men of stamna are to be found, who are doing iheir utmost to develop < the„ rich reefs which abound in.this district," and there is no doubt but they will meet With success. Thc present aspect of mining affairs here warrants us in predicting that at the end of next summer the Arrow district will present a picture of success second to none in the Province. We are not building without substance. The many reefs we hate already in hand, but want developing to prove their wealth. Tho late result of the taking up of anabandoned reef by a tribute party, is quite enough to encourage everyone to interest themselves in aiding the work of prospecting for new reefs. Mr It. B. Smith is noyf travelling round the district, collecting money which is. to hp used, for quartz-, reef prospecting. The ’Government is to subsidise the money collected. If £IOO is collected, the.Government gives another £IOO, Therefore it is the bounden duty of everyone to give this effort their utmost help. It will no doubt be hard for the public to erase from their minds the practices of old but"when we have the fact realised by the testing of some of our reefs, we shall then discover that we have been living in lethargy i n the finest reefing district in the Province. -
