Within'recent years, however, the rate of emigration has been greatly reduced; returned for 1874 is the fifth lowest recorded during the past quarter of a century, but still 73,184 is a large number of people for a country with a population scarcely reaching b\ millions to lose by voluntary expatriation in one year 1 . The Hon. Dr Pollen is gazetted President of the Executive Council of New Zealand. An order in Council provides that all expenditure .on the gold-fields in the'Trovince* of Auckland shall be •.regulated by Acts passed by the Superintendent and Provincial Council.
