COLONIAL AND GENERAL.
The first issue of gold by the Victorian branch of the Royal Mint took place on Monday, Bth July. The amount issued was 40,000 sovereigns. As an instance of the strict probity which characterises witness in warden's Courts, a correspondent of the Charleston Herald reports a conversation occurring at the door of the Court-house there:—Olaimholder: "Why did you not swear so and so ?" Wagesman (with up-turned eyes and pitiful look) : " Swear ! Why, I thank Heaven that I got out without getting two years for what I did say ?" Claimholder: " I've lost my claim through you, and have a mind to kick you." 0 tempora I 0 mores 1 Xt is said that an Italian of the name of Goroni has undertaken to petrify the body of Mazzini within eight months. M. Goroni has been for years engaged in special duties of this nature, and has arrived at the most extraordinary results. Among other proofs of his skill, the doctor possesses a stick of which the head is formed of a human eye in an admirable state of preservation, and as hard as a crystal. The Gvlgong Argixs says the shepherds in No 20, North Star Lead, were startled by the appearance of a female, who came upon the ground, and made all necessary inquiries, and, on account of the absence of a representative of one of the shares, jumped it. She appeared to be familiar with the mining regulations, and, we believe, is considered an important and interesting addition to the company of shepherds in No " Get out of my way—what are you good for P" said a cross old man to a little bright-eyed urchin, who happened to stand in the way. The little fellow, as he stepped one 6ide, replied very gently, " They make men out of such things as we aie."
