Dukedik, May 29. A child named Wanston has been burned to death.
A strong opinion prevails in political circles here regarding the refusal of "the General Government to sanction the Education and Hospital Reserves. The Otago members of the Assembly have agreed to unite to obtain the same.
The Council yesterday refused to raise the pay of the police. This morning, all the force, except two Sergeants in charge of the Depot, refused to go on duty. Government are seeing the men ; but the Press is uninformed of the result.
Mr Luckie, a Government supporter, has been returned for Nelson, beating Mr Richmond by 151 voies. The Assembly meets on July 16th. A document relative to the ship Matauka which was wrecked, has been picked up off the Ocean Beach, Dunedin. It was written apparently on a sheet out of a note book and with pencil It purports to be written by the first, uiste, who states that he and some ablebodied seaman in the long bout were making for S.W., New Guinea. All the passengers lost.
This Morning. The Supplementary Estimates were passed last night.
The following are the Wakatip items —Maori Point Track to Miller's Flat, £100; Macetown to Big Hill, £300; Skippers to Branches, £2OO.
The Government have agreed to subsidise the Arrow River Valley track. The Executive have decided that the Receiver who may be stationed at Arrowtown as Warden aud Receive* The Council will be prorogued tomorrow.
