ENTERTAINMENT IN AID OF THE ARROW SCHOOL FUNDS.
The tea-meeting, concert and auction B aar, in aid of the Arrowtown School nids. which took place on the evening last Saturday, proved in every re■ct equal to t e expectations of its omoters. Of course, this result might ve been foreseen from the active symithy displayed, and co-operation forded, by nearly every head of a mily, and others, throughout the dis!ct. A number of ladies generoutdy wided, and presided over, the tables five in number; while those who uld not find it convenient, or were able to do so much, contributed libe|y to the general stock, iu the shape edibles, farm and garden produce, e stock, and fancy goods. As already mtioned, there were five table, each ing superintended by two ladies, viz. No. 1, Mesdames De La Perrelle and Murphy ; No. 2, Mesdames Wm. alsh and R. E. Field); No. 3, the Jisses Paterson ; No. 4, Mesdamos L. filler and J. Reid ; and No. 5, lesdames W. M'Hutchieson and S. N.
Brown. It is almost needless to say ihat the various tables were heaped with the most tempting comestibles, »'hile the flower garden had been largely &Ued upon to embellish and add to the
fttraotivenesa of the whole. A large number availed themselves of enjoying ;he " cup that cheers," and the utmost
cordiality and homely feeling existed. One circumstance is worthy of mention, is that the advertised hour of meeting was punctually attended to—thusallowing the Management to carry out the programme laid down. By 8 o'clock the tea was over, the hall cleared, and then began THE CONCERT. Considering the very limited time for practice at the disposal {of the lady aud gentlemen" amateurs—only some ei"ht or ten days—this part of the entertainment was gone through in a highly creditable manner. In the concerted , pieces a weakness was uoticeable in the bass, but we understand this was unavoidable, owing to the unlooked-for absence through illness of the gentleman to whom this part had been allotted The vocal part of the programme was relieved at intervals by recitations delivered by scholars attending the Arrow School, aud it was really astonishing how the little fellows could compass pieces of a length and diction which would tax older heads. From thp style and force with which they were rendered, it is pretty evident that their instructor is at some pains to impart to his pupils a taste for eloqution. It would be wrong lor us to forget paying a high tribute to the vers excellent instrumental music given by Messrs Murphy (violin), Clarke and M-Lay (flute), aud Anderson (guitar). The performance of these gentlemen did much to add to the pleasure of the evening.
Where everyone did their parts so well it would be bad taste to particularise, and in giving the Programme we will only say that each performer came in for a hearty round of applause. The Programme was as follows:
"The Cl-ud capped lowers"—Mesdames Perrelle and Watson j Messrs Turner He iley and Perrelle. '
"John Anderson my Jo"—Mrs Watson Recitation, "The Country Physician"— Master James Reid.
"Pot Hagau the Cobbler"—Mr George White. ° "See our Oars"—Mesdames Watson and Perrelle ; Messrs Healey, Perrelle and 1 urner. "Address to France" (song)—Mr AnderBun. Recitation, " Lawyer and Yorkshire I'aimer"—Master \V. Butler. "Tun Gibbs and his Sow"—Mr James Naples. " Twinkling Stars" (duett)— Mrs Perrelle and Mr Healey. " Tr e banks and braes"—Mrs Dixou and fllr Anderson. Recitation -« Norval"—Master Houlahan. ' the Banks of the Genesee"—Mesdames Perrelle and Watson; Messrs Healey and Perrelle. J * Ching Chong's Wedding"—Mr White. Recitation, " Farmer's Wife and Gascon" Master C. Paterson. 'Home, Sweet Home"—Mrs Watson. Recitation—" Thanksgiving Hymn"— Miss Annie Ferguson. "God Save the Queen"—Company. THE AUCTION BAZAAR Was commenced at ten o'clock, and considering the short time in which the auctioneer, Mr H. J. Cope (in the absence of Mr D. Powell) had to sell off the things, he managed to dispose of a pretty long list, comprising a varied description of nic-nacks, from a box of pill s , 0 half-a-ton of coals. Of course, the usual chuff and joking incidental to these affairs was indulged in, and the two hours till midnight rapidly wore away, but not before the irrepressible H.J.C. had managed to get rid of nearly every article at his disposal, and lightened the pockets of his auditory 'o the tune of some £2O. We believe that, as near as can yet °e arrived at, the clear gain to the £SO WIU amoUQt to betw een £4O and
