Lake County Council Monthly Meeting The monthly' meeting of the Lake County Council, held last Thursday, was attended by Cr D. H. Cockburn (chairman), and Crs McLean, C.. ,J* Soper, W. H. 'Thompson and D. R. Rowe. Apologies were received fro™ Crs D. C. Aubrey and T. E. Bryant. TREASURER'S STATEMENT The treasurer’s statement showed a debit balance of £.3700 16s 2d, plus accounts to pay amounting to £ 562 11s. Cutstanding rates amounted to £ 6840 10s, and other outstanding revenue, £2171 15s 7d. HON. R. SEMPLE The Minister of Works, Hon. R. Semple, advised the council that he had no intention of visiting the county in the near future, but stated that he would receive a deputation from the Upper Wakatipu Progress League as requested next time he was in the district. The council would be, advised. ELECTRICITY HOLD-UP r Prospects of’ undertaking electrical reticulation work in the KingstonGarston area had not improved owing to ‘ material and labour shortage, according to advice received from the Distict Engineer, Southland Electric Power Supply. ' MORE ELECTRICITY The Otago Central Electric Power Board advised that in respect of rural reticulation in Queenstown-Arrow district, steps are being taken to raise a loan for this purpose so that the extension ia. definitely on the board’s programme of new work. MOTOR GATE APPROVED Approval to erect a motor gate across the road near the bridge over the Mataura river wag granted Messrs S. Soper and Sons. j WANAKA STATION REQUEST The manager of Wanaka Station ■’ wrote regarding the effect of temporary measures used by the council in dealing with the intake water race from the Cardrona river. He thanked the council for installing an intake gate, but the pipe across the highway is still too high and creates too great a block to the velocity of water. He asked that the council consider the replace-, ment of a bridge. The County Engineer is to confer with the Highways' Engineer in this connection and is to report to a future meeting. ELECTRICITY FOR GLENORCHY The’ State Hydro Electric Department forwarded a copy of a draft Order in Council authorising L. I. Smith, Glenorchy, to use water fqr the purpose of generating electricity and to erect and use electric lines. The council decided not to raise any objection subject to- satisfaction being reached in the matter of capacity and continuity of. supply. " DISTRICT PUBLIC TRUSTEE' The District Public Trustee sought permission to allow the county clerk to act as his agent in the district, as much of the work involved directly concerned information from local bodies. The council granted permission. APPLICATION TO LOAN BOARD As previous quotes received for the building of new houses were prohibitive, the council resolved to give public notice of intention to apply to the Loans Board making application for loans to purchase houses for executive staff. HISTORICAL WAGON WHEELS Mr G. D. MacPherson, chairman of the Early Settlers’ Association Museum Exhibition, Dunedin, wrote asking if the council would lend the association the wagon wheels which are in front of the county offices. The wheels have some definite history. EROSION DANGER Mr W. A. Grant, Kinloch, advised the council of the erosion danger to several hundred, acres of grazing land bordering the Dar f river. Nurses’ Christian Union Meeting at Queenstown Past and present members and friends assembled at the residence of ■Mr and .Mrs J. Ingles, Queenstown, last Wednesday might to hear an address given by Mrs Ewan, wife of Dr Baldwin Ewan, Wellington. Miss Friis, of Dunedin, accompanied Mrs Ewan. The speaker’s remarks dealt with the Nurses’ Christian Uxiion, the ahnual conference of which was hel£ at Dunedin recently. The movement, she said, had made slow but steady progress since it originated in Wellington some 24 years ago. It was undenominational but with Christian principles and was made up of groups largely centred in hospitals throughout the Dominion. An outline was given of the humanitarian work which was being undertaken by the union for sick and uniform nurses. Mrs Ewan was thanked for her address and was assured of the formation of a group in the district. . It was decided to meet again in a month’s time. Mr and Mrs Ingles were thanked for the use of their residence and for their hospitality.
