ROTARY

Mr Fred Lucas, who is associated with Southern Scenic Airtrips, Ltd., was the speaker on the occasion of the Queenstown Eotary Club’s meeting held last Thursday. His talk covered his experiences on board ship and in piloting. of aircraft during the war. The overseas toast, the Garston Club, Liverpool, was Mr W., Davies, and was duly honoured.

Celebrations of Rotary Club

The fourth . birthday of. the Queenstown Eotary C.lpb was celebrated last Saturday night.• ,Thirty : two visiting Eotarians were present,, including. 22 from the Invercargill club and others from Alexandra. * Mr J. D. Gilmour, sponsor of the club, was in the chair and welcomed four visitors to the function —Messrs D, H. Cockburn, D. W. Thompson, M. T. Eobertson and E. McGowan. Among the Invercargill Eotarians present were the three foundation members of that .club —Messrs D. McKay, J. D. Wesney and W. Boyes—who received a hearty welcome. They had been 24 years in Eotary. Mr Gilmour traced the history of the club and told of the work it had achieved. He congratulated the club for the way in which it had set an t example to the rest of New Zealand by continuing its meetings throughout the summer. He pointed out that Queenstown was the smallest community ,in New Zealand to have a Eotary club, Mr Laing of the Invercargill . club gave an interesting address outlining the< work this club was doing in fostering youth movements in the district. The Sunshine Fund benefited considerably from the function and the proceeds will be directed towards replacing burnt-out bush, along the Two Mile. Toasts were: —Eotary International, Queenstown Club, Invercargill, the sponsor clubj and Alexandra, the sister club. The evening was interspersed with vocal items.
