Queenstown Regatta Club Holds Annual Meeting
There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Queenstown Regatta Club and at the committee meeting which’ preceded it. Mr C. M. Inglis, president, was in the chair. Discussion on various matters including the secretary’s resignation were deferred. The balance sheet and report were submitted. The latter showed the receipts as £.154 Is lid. There was a debit balance of £7 14s 5d for the working year which was drawn from the Post Office Savings Bank account. The debit was largely due to a, shrinkage in launch fares, absence of side-shows and the larger amount paid out in prize money. The club has a surplus of £213 4s 3d. The report which covered the operations concerning the 1947 regatta, pointed to a delay in starting due to a southerly swell. The fixture was therefore not completed until Sunday morning. There was only one entry for the eight-oared event, Awarua, which gave a demonstration over a two-mile course. The thanks of the club were due to the officials who discharged their respective duties with much credit. The results of last year’s events were noted. The club would have to make early arrangements for accommodation for rowers for the next regatta. The president moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet which was carried. Election of Office Bearers Two nominations were received for the office of president, namely, Messrs C. M. Inglis and L, Lewis and on a ballot being taken, the former was reelected. There was a reversal of this decision later in the meeting when Mr Inglis retired from the presidency to take up the position of secretary and Mr Lewis was elected president. The following patrons were elected: Hon. Adam Hamilton, Messrs Dickson Jardine, D. H. Cockburn, G. R. Cockburn and T. L. Mac Donald, M.P.; vicepresidents: Messrs L. J. Lynch. W. D. Warren, S. Ryan, E. E. Hopwood, T. H. Tallentire, A. H. Wheatley, J. C. Scott and Dr W. A. Anderson. The executive committee appointed was: Messrs—C. A. Inglis, C. G. Eoderique, L. G. Lynch, R. C. Robins. T. Donaldson, J. McKinney, E. McNeill, A. Muirhead, A. Farrant, L. P. Evans, D. G. Cochrane, D. W. Thompson. Messrs R. J. Fuller, L. J. Lynch, .1. C. Scott were re-edected judges. Mr M. T. Robertson handed in his resignation as secretary of the club, a position he has held since 1939. The reasons given for his retirement from the office were obvious to members, namely, his recent appointment as town clerk. Asked to reconsider his decision, Mr Robertson definitely declined the position. Members expressed their appreciation of the excellent service which he had rendered to the club. Several members were nominated for the office but declined. A compromise was then made and the appointments of secretary and presi-
dent fell on Messrs C. M. Inglis and L. Lewis respectively. Mr V. Scandrett was re-elected auditor. It was formerly moved that the regatta be held on Easter Saturday, March 27. The urgency of obtaining accommodation at an early date for competitors at the regatta was discussed and the matter was left in the hands of a committee consisting of the president, secretary and Mr Eoderique. Last year’s programme was adopted with the inclusion of an ejght-oarcd event. It was decided that entries closo on March 13. The president and secretary were appointed collectors. The matter of side-shows, preferably the purchase of some popular equipment, was referred to a committee consisting of Messrs T. Donaldson, k. H. Wheatley and W. D. Warren.
