DRILL HALL MAINTENANCE
Repairs Necessary QUEENSTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL Repairs to the Drill Hall were discussed at the monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council last Thursday following receipt of a letter from the officer commanding Area No. 12. The matter was referred to the Works Committee with a recommendation that the back portion of the hall bo attended to meanwhile. The letter from the area commander stated that an inspection of the hall had been carried out and that numerous matters required attention to maintain the hall in fair order. In answer to questions, the Mayor, Dr W. A. Anderson, who presided, stated that the lease of the hall had been changed from a yearly one to one for 21 years. The council, he stated, was responsible for maintenance. The Mayor referred to the loss the council had sustained in the death of Cr Aburn, who had performed sterling service during his period on the council. A vote of sympathy with the relatives was passed and the meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect. , Conditions during the past month had been satisfactory, reported Mr R. O. Wilkinson, traffic inspector. -No accidents involving personal injury were reported during the month. Attention of the council was drawn to the necessity for the erection of more “No Parking” signs, in the main street, because it was intended to enforce the regulations during the coming holiday period. —The town clerk was instructed to confer with the inspector in regard to signs, and also the possibility of one-way traffic in certain busy streets during, the peak of the holiday season. Fire Hazard The chairman of the Works Committee reported on work carried out during the past month. He drew the council’s attention to the fire hazard on the cemetery reserve, where long grass is growing between young trees, and suggested that the grass cither he cut or ploughed in between the trees. The librarian reported that one resident of the town became a member during the month, 12 visitors joined for short periods, and fees and fines for the period amounted to £4 4s 9d. Eighteen new novels for the rental section had proved very popular. —The report was adopted .and the recommendations of the chairman (Cr Sew Hoy) to remove a tree at the rear of the library, and to increase the librarian’s salary to 35s per week were approved. The Inspector of Health reported that the following sanitary inspections had been performed during September: Drainage 5, plumbing 5, food premises 10, hotels 5, boarding houses 2, refuse tip 2, nuisance complaints 2, motor camp 2, mortuary 1. Conditions generally were good in the borough, he stated, and where improvements had been asked for the owners had given willing co-operation. The Southland Representation Committee, Otago Centennial Procession, wrote requesting a donation to assist in the financing of tho floral float to take part in the Otago centennial pro-cession.-—lt was decided to advise the committee that the council was beholden to the Otago province in respect of subscriptions to the centennial. The South Islands’ Travel Association wrote seeking a donation,to assist in the production of booklets, folders and stickers giving publicity to Now Zealand for distribution overseas. —Received. Mr T. L, Macdonald, M.P., wrote advising that he was taking up the matter of the road to the camping ground and supply of army huts for the camping ground and would advise in due course as to Avhat could be done. —It was decided to write thanking Mr Macdonald for his efforts.
