COMMITTEE’S WORK

The resignation of the chairman of the Works Committee of the Queenstown Borough Council, Cr H. W. Sew Hoy, was received with regret at the meeting of the Borough Council last Thursday. Cr D, W. Thompson was appointed to replace him. Mrs K. Sanders wrote drawing the council’s attention to a broken fence and dead trees on borough property adjoining her property, and suggested that the council should give the residents a lead in the beautifying of the town by removing dead hedges erecting a fence and forming a footpath in front of its own property. —The matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee with power to act. Library Committee Report i The librarian reported as follows: — Two residents of the |owp became members of the library during the month; 10 visitors joined the library for a short period. Fees and fines for the month amounted to £3 7s Id. The report was adopted pnthe motion of the chairman, Cr H. W 4 Sew Hoy, and Cr A. H. Wheatley. Works Committee Report Matters which had received attention during the month were detailed in the report. i The county grader was engaged for three and a-half days grading in the camping ground and,' streets. Gravelling Will probably be commenced next .week. The adoption of the report was moved by his Worship and Cr Hamilton. The matter of sheep straying off the hills and being a nuisance in the town was discussed by the council, and it was decided to give warning to two station owners that the inspector of nuisances for the borough would take ation if these sheep could not be kept out of the borough. Cr D. W. Thompson placed before the council a suggestion that 50 to 100 huts be secured if possible from some military camp, to be used at the camping ground to accommodate people who could not secure the necessary acommodation in the town, and who are deprived of the privilege of visiting Queenstown through not enough accommodation being available. It was decided that the idea was an excellent one, and that Mr T. Mac Donald, M.P., be communicated with regarding the availability of securing these huts. Holes in Footpath Cr Sew Hoy drew the council’s attention to the bad holes in the. footpaths in the main shopping area. The clerk advised that Roadite had been ordered for this purpose. It was resolved that the footpaths receive immediate attention. It was decided to write to Messrs Fulton and Hogan, contractors, regardv Ihg the sand on the street, caused by the top-dressing of tar-sealing operations that had been carried out on the State highway some months ago. Cr Hamilton referred the council to the state of Malaghan street, the water off this street causing damage to a property owner. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to inspect; also to place the day man on repairing the end of this street. Accounts amounting to £375 5s 9d were passed for payment.
